(SLAVERY AND ABOLITION.) CLARKSON, THOMAS. Title-page vignette and large folding plate of the diagram of the hold of the slave ship Brooks. 106 pages. 8vo, contemporary full Spanish tree calf, almost imperceptibly re-cased at an early date with new marbled end-papers. Professional archival repair to the diagram along the folds as is common with this large engraved plate. Barcelona: Jose Torner, 1825

  • Notes: first spanish edition, following the London edition of 1821. Thomas Clarkson together with William Wilberforce were the two leading and loudest voices fighting for the abolition of the African slave trade in England. It was Clarkson who gathered the "evidence" and Wilberforce that presented the "abstract" of it before Parliament in 1791. This is where the famous engraving of the slave ship's interior was first presented before the public. Spain, with her enormous colonies in South America, had thousands of slaves. It is not therefore surprising that Clarkson's work (and that of others) would be translated for the use of the Spanish abolitionist movement.
