(SLAVERY and ABOLITION.) (COMMEMORATIVE MEDAL.) In Commemoration of the Extinction of Colonial Slavery throughout the British Dominion in the Reign of William the IV, Augt. 1, 1834. Silver-plated pewter medal with the above inscription on one side, with the obverse showing a former slave with arms spread and holding broken slave-chains, 1 3/4 inches in diameter; plating mostly worn off, small drill-hole above the image of the former slave. - Notes: One of a number of commemorative pieces to celebrate the Abolition of Slavery in the West Indies. Plates, cups, and textiles were also produced. Birmingham was the seat of some of the most powerful anti-slavery groups in Great Britain.
