(SLAVERY AND ABOLITION.) CONNECTICUT. "At Bridgewater, November 4th day, 1776. Then Received of Josiah Hayden fifty pounds of money for a Negro girl name Anais. She is about twenty one or two years old. Born in my house, a slave. Received by me, Daniel Howard." Small, narrow piece of paper, 2 x 8 inches; paper evenly toned. Bridgewater, CT, 1776

  • Notes: A Note on the reverse states: "This paper, in the handwriting of grandfather Howard, the father of my mother, 1819, Charles Hayden." Josiah Hayden, the purchaser of the slave Anais, was in Captain Bailey's company of Minute Men which marched on the alarm of April 19, 1775. A very interesting association.
