(SLAVERY AND ABOLITION.) CRANDALL, PRUDENCE. Autograph Letter of Recommendation for Mary L. Morgan.

RARE AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED (SLAVERY AND ABOLITION.) CRANDALL, PRUDENCE. Autograph Letter of Recommendation for Mary L. Morgan. Single small 4to leaf of pink paper, folded to form four pages, written on one side only; short closed tear at the fold. Canterbury, March 28, 1832

  • Notes: Prudence Crandall (1803-1890), a white boarding school principal shocked the parents of her students when in the Fall of 1832, she allowed Sarah Harris, the daughter of a local free black family to attend the Canterbury Female Boarding School. The parents of the white students promptly removed their children. Crandall then opened her own school naming it "Miss Crandall's School for Young Ladies and Misses of Color." Twenty young colored girls from Boston, New York and Providence enrolled. This so enraged the inhabitants of Canterbury, that Crandall's life was threatened. A court order was then issued to close the school. Ignoring it, she was brought to court and not only lost the case, but an angry mob burned her school to the ground. Crandall eventually moved to Kansas and opened a school there.
