(SLAVERY AND ABOLITION.) DEANE, CHARLES. Letters and Documents relating to Slavery in Massachusetts, Edited, with a Preface and Notes by Charles Deane. [375]-442 pages. 8vo, original wrappers bound in later cloth-backed marbled paper-covered boards; front wrapper mounted, title-page and second leaf loose; blind-stamp of the Long Island Historical Society. Cambridge: Press of John Wilson and Son, 1877

  • Notes: first edition. one of only 25 copies printed. Prints an early and not very well-known collection of correspondence stemming from a letter from St. George Tucker of Virginia to Jeremy Belknap of Massachusetts, asking that Belknap print and circulate a number of letters of inquiry and opinion regarding the process of the emancipation of slaves. Tucker was the author of a pamphlet on the gradual emancipation of slavery in Virginia and in the South in general. "To what number of these circulars sent out by Dr. Belknap received answers, we have no means certainly of knowing. Some of them," he says, "gave answers from which, and from other sources of information, he drew up an interesting paper, which he sent to Judge Tucker, and which that same year was printed in the third serial of Volume IV of the Collections of this Society. [Massachusetts Historical Society]. There are several copies in institutions, but we could find none in commerce in the past 20 years. Schomburg copy in microfiche; not in Blockson.
