(SLAVERY AND ABOLITION.) DOUGLASS, FREDERICK. Group of seven issues of Frederick Douglass' Paper: July 10, 1851 * April 8, 1852 * October 22, 1852 * August 12, 1852 * August 19, 1853 * December 8, 1854 * May 11, 1860. Uniform large bifolium, except for the last issue, in smaller format. Creases where folded; some wear, at times causing the loss of a few words at the conjunction of the folds; small rectangular piece cut through from the April 8, 1852 issue; condition varies. should be seen. Rochester, 1859

  • Notes: A good, representational grouping of Frederick Douglass' Papers, with letters or articles by Douglass throughout. Other contributors include Samuel May, William Lloyd Garrison, Wendell Phillips, et al. But more interesting are the articles by Jermain Loguen and other African-American authors and escaped slaves like Douglass. Also, there are unexpected items such as the serial publication of Charles Dickens' "Bleak House." "An Important Change" is announced in the smaller format issue for May 11, stating that due to lack of funds, the Frederick Douglass Paper will become The Frederick Douglass Monthly in June. Douglass was abroad from 1859 until 1860, and came home to find that his daughter had passed away and the country was on the brink of Civil War.
