(SLAVERY AND ABOLITION.) DU BOIS, W. E. B. The Suppression of the African Slave Trade to the United States. Graphs and charts. Large, thick 8vo, original publisher's wine-red cloth, lettered in gilt; publisher's inserted card between free end-paper and pastedown regarding the discounting of the sale-price; bookplate of the Wrights; some slight abrasion to the spine extremities. New York: Longmans, Green and Co, 1896

  • Notes: first edition, hard cover issue of the author's rare first book, a commercially published version of his doctoral dissertation at Harvard. W. E. B. Du Bois (1868-1963) took great pains to transform over three hundred pages of rather dry historical facts into readable and understandable prose. His study went considerable farther than any previous attempt to examine the trade, and is divided into three distinct sections: 199 pages of the actual history, beginning with the Colonial period and taking the reader through the end of the Civil War. There follow four "appendices, chronicling legislation, etc, in chronological sequence.
