(SLAVERY AND ABOLITION.) Emancipator Extra.

(SLAVERY AND ABOLITION.) Emancipator Extra. Large publisher's prospectus, 14x8-3/4 inches, being a single large folio leaf, folded to form four pages, printed on three; first page with a large woodcut; beneath that are six more, smaller cuts, all depicting the cruelties of slavery. New York: Anti-slavery Society, 1839

  • Notes: rare. oclc locates only three copies. A publisher's prospectus, signed in type by R.G. Williams, "book Agent of the American Anti-Slavery Society." The seven woodcuts that appear on the front cover are large versions of the ones that would be appearing in the 1840 almanac. Williams, who was taking over the position of "book agent," was charged with increasing the subscription of the Almanac in this its second year. The prospectus was not simply a tool to increase the subscription of the Almanac alone, but explains how to order an entire anti-slavery ibrary, listing all of the books and pamphlets necessary. There are six libraries of various size, depending on one's pocketbook. Libraries 1, 2, and 3 are "for private individuals . . . and small School Districts." "No's 4 and 5 contain the most important works, and No 6 contains nearly a complete list of all the publications sold at our Depository."
