(SLAVERY AND ABOLITION.) Estate papers of a wealthy Texan distributing his slaves. 4 manuscript pages, 12 x 7 1/2 inches, on one folding sheet; small faint ink stain, minimal wear. Limestone County, TX, August 1860

  • Notes: An early manuscript copy of the undated will of Beden Stroud (circa 1795-1865), who settled in Burr Oak Springs, TX not far east of Waco in 1844, along with his late brother Ethan. Having died childless, he left more than 30 named enslaved people to various nieces and nephews, some with family relationships spelled out, such as "Nervy and her two children Jim & Raymond." One of Stroud''s nephews mentioned here, Logan A. Stroud (1814-1911), has been described as the largest slave owner in Limestone County at the time of Emancipation.
