  • Notes: first edition. Dedicated to thomas jefferson "it was widely sold in the south and west, and ran into ten editions. With its pleasant mingling of poetical quotations, anecdotes, sentiment and sound practical counsel, it was a valued possession on isolated plantations of the time" [DAB]. Ewell states "And I can not but breathe the most fervent wish that my numerous friends the Planters, for whose service chiefly this book is intended, would be persuaded to insist more rigorously on cleanliness in the persons of their slaves. . .The poorest slave however degraded his condition may be, has still left a portion of mind which can never be totally insensible to his outward appearance."
