(SLAVERY AND ABOLITION.)--FOLK ART. Runaways [supplied title.] Pair of hand-made figures, 8-1/2 inches high, dressed in various types of fabric, sewn over pieces of twigs; faces made of some sort of dark resinous material; both hold sacks, the man holds a walking stick, made from a twig. Np, circa 1850's-1900

  • Notes: A highly unusual pair of folk figures, in the form of runaway slaves. Both are dressed in typical mid-nineteenth century style, she, with a calico apron over a long striped dress; he, wearing a shirt that looks like "home-spun" fabric; both are holding the type of sack typically shown in 19th-century depictions of runaway slaves.
