FRANKLIN PRINTING (SLAVERY AND ABOLITION.) [FRANKLIN, BENJAMIN.] WHITEFIELD, REV. GEORGE. Three Letters From the Reverend Mr. G. Whitefield [III: To the Inhabitants of Maryland, Virginia, North and South Carolina Concerning their Negroes.] Demi-8vo: [1]-14, lacks the final leaf, 15-15-16. Philadelphia, 1740

  • Notes: a rare franklin printing. This group of three "Letters" from the noted New England divine includes a strong caution concerning the keeping of slaves. No copy has appeared at auction in the last twenty-five years. George Whitefield (1714-1770) is remembered for having preached to Phillis Wheatley. Wheatley wrote a poetical eulogy upon Whitefield's death published in broadside form in 1770. Benjamin Franklin was well acquainted with Whitefield, whose voice he was told could carry to a crowd of ten thousand. A sceptic, Franklin attended one of his lectures, and walked, backing away from Whitefield until he could no longer hear his voice. He then calculated the distance the Reverend's voice could carry and determined that he could indeed preach to ten thousand. Miller, Benjamin Franklin's Philadelphia Printing, 1728-1766, number 224.
