(SLAVERY AND ABOLITION.) GARRISON, WILLIAM LLOYD. Autograph Letter Signed to "Dear Friend," Elwood Evans. Single page, dated Boston, March 23, 1847, addressed by Garrison and bearing a red post office cancel from Boston. Boston, 1847

  • Notes: a letter with excellent content, discussing abolitionist and close friend Henry C. Wright (1797-1890) and Frederick Douglass (1817-1895.) "It gives me great pleasure to convey to you the intelligence you desire to receive, respecting Henry C. Wright and Frederick Douglass." He goes on the say that the steamer Hibernia had just arrived from Liverpool bringing him a letter from Wright who would be returning to the States in July or August. In the meantime he asks that any letters for him should be addressed to Richard D. Webb (1805-1872) Irish abolitionist and newspaper publisher. He says that while he did not receive anything directly from Frederick Douglass, he saw it announced in The British Friend that Douglass would be embarking for the U.S. on the steamer Liverpool on April 4th. He adds that letters from other sources confirmed that, and adds that it would be senseless to send him anything in that he would be on his return voyage by the time anything reached England. From the autograph collection of Elwood Evans (1828-1898.)
