(SLAVERY AND ABOLITION.) GRIMKE, SARAH AND ANGELINA, AND THEODORE WELD. Catalogue of the Anti-Slavery Books and Pamphlets formed by Theodore D Weld, Sarah and Angelina Grimke of Boston and South Carolina, together with Other Consignments. . . 137 pages. Small 4to, original printed salmon wrappers with yapped edges. An exceptional copy. Boston: Libbie & Co., 1910

  • Notes: a highly unusual catalogue of material from the libraries of these three noted figures. Theodore D. Weld (1803-1895) was a New England abolitionist, while Sarah and Angelina Grimke were born in Charleston, South Carolina in 1792 and 1805 respectively. The sisters traveled throughout the North, lecturing about their first hand experiences with slavery on their family's plantation. Among the first women to act publicly in social reform movements, they received abuse and ridicule for their abolitionist beliefs. They both realized that women would have to create a safe space in the public arena to be effective reformers, and became early activists in the women's rights movement. The catalogue is quite a mix due to Libbie's habit of combining other consignor's lots with those of these abolitionists, thus it is difficult to tell precisely which are Weld's or the Grimke sisters' items.
