  • Notes: Bill of sale from James Foushee to Henry Sisson of "one negro boy called Willobe." Northumberland, VA, 23 October 1760 * Letter Cuthbert Bullitt to James Keith of Frederick. "Mr. Brown sends up the bearer for his negroes. . . You were imposed on in the character of the slaves. . . . You sent down your overseer for them to hire. I told their qualities & that their running away was a principal motive with their mistress for hiring them out." Np, 29 December 1769 * Testimony regarding "a negro man named Jean" concerning transportation costs back to owner Daniel McNeill of Hampshire County. Np, 14 August 1778 * Deed of gift from John Turberville to granddaughter Martha Felicia Turberville of "one negro girl named Pat about 14 years of age." Westmoreland County, VA, 26 January 1790 * Deed of gift from Benjamin Hackney to daughter Elizabeth Philpott of "the three following slaves, viz Ben, Peggy and Sillas and their future increase." Westmoreland County, VA, 28 September 1790 * Slave hire agreement from George Lee Turberville to James Darne of "negro John"--"also to give sd negro a suit of summer and winter clotheing, one hat, a blanket and a pr of double sole shoes."
