(SLAVERY AND ABOLITION.) Group of receipts for slaves bought and sold by Texas planter William H. Miller. 5 signed manuscript bills of sale, various sizes; condition generally strong, one with crude repairs at folds. Washington County, TX, 1847-63

  • Notes: William H. Miller (1811-1870) appears in the 1860 census as a farmer in Chappell Hill, TX. The first three bills of sale are for slaves sold to Miller, including: "Eliza, aged about 11 years, dark mulatto," 2 March 1847 * "Negro girl Caroline . . . about 22 years old, black complexion," 5 November 1850 * and "Negro woman named Mary, a slave for life, she being 21 years of age," 17 November 1858. The last two are for slaves sold by Miller to Mary Duncan: "Two certain negro slaves to wit: Maria & her child Ann," 3 March 1863 * "Two certain negro slaves to wit: Eliza & her child Maria." 3 March 1863. Eliza might well be the same 11-year-old girl he had purchased in 1847. With --a manuscript survey of Miller''s land done for his estate in 1871, including a hand-colored plat map.
