"HOW ARE NEGROES SELLING IN TENN" (SLAVERY AND ABOLITION.) HICKS, EDWARD [SLAVE DEALER.] A letter from Emma Hicks to her brother Edward, regarding an investment in slaves. Small folio leaf, folded to form four pages, written on three sides, together with the original mailing envelope. "Mount Necessity," April 18, 1855

  • Notes: "My Dear Brother; Mama intends going to Jackson in a few minutes, so I must be very fashionable (brief). Permit me to congratulate you on the eve of your marriage, our mother on the success of your suit. Thanks to you for the interest in my worldly possessions. . . ." She goes on to say that it would be best to leave her money where it is, with her guardian, "which will be about three weeks hence. Ma says how are Negroes selling in Tenn. She thinks it best to invest in Negroes, say two Negro girls, or a woman with children and if they are cheaper in Tenn for him to buy them, if not to purchase them in Miss." Edward Hicks, the writer''s brother was a well-known slave dealer in Nashville. We could not find a plantation named "Necessity," but perhaps this was a joke between sister and brother.
