  • Notes: John Brown (circa 1810-1876) was an escaped slave from Georgia who made his way to England in 1850 after the Fugitive Slave Law was passed. He earned his living as a carpenter and herbalist, and also as an abolitionist lecturer; his memoir was published in 1855. Offered here are a promotional letter Brown wrote, as well as a lecture broadside and two leaflets. Autograph Letter Signed to Samuel Horton: "I have taken the liberty of writing to you to ask you the favour whether you think it be any chance for me to get a meeting kept at Hartwell, as I am in the neighborhood. Sir, I have sent you one of my circulars." One page, 8 3/4 x 7 inches. Chesham, England, 3 August 1854 * Broadside: "Slavery and its Horrors! . . . A Lecture will be Delivered in Portman Hall . . . by the Rev. S.R. Ward from Canada, and Mr. J. Brown, a Gentleman of Colour, and an Escaped Slave from the State of Georgia." Announces that Brown will "appear in his Horns and Bells, such as are worn by re-captured Slaves, and exhibit a nigger-popper, also several African Hymns will be sung." 8 x 11 3/4 inches; folds, closed tear, cropped. [London], 20 July 1854 * "A Statement of the Case of John Brown, a Fugitive Slave from Georgia, U.S." 4 printed pages, 6 1/2 x 4 1/4 inches, on one folding sheet. Sunderland, England: W.H. Hills, circa 1854 * "Preparing for Press, Slave Life in Georgia, being the Narrative of John Brown, a Fugitive Slave Now in England," printed handbill, 8 1/4 x 5 1/4 inches. None of the three printed pieces are traced in OCLC.
