ANTI-LINCOLN PROPAGANDA (SLAVERY AND ABOLITION.) LINCOLN, ABRAHAM. 500,000 More. Dars a heap of trouible on the old man's mind. This is to whom it may concern. Card, printed in green on yellow coated stock 2 x 3-1/2 inches; some light soiling; signs on the reverse of having been in an album. Np, circa 1864

  • Notes: A rare anti-Lincoln propaganda piece from 1864 campaign to re-elect the President. It depicts Lincoln as a baboon, with the caption "500,000 More, dars a heap of trouble on the old man's mind. This to whom it may concern" The message here is simple. The "500,000 More" refers to Lincoln's July 18th 1864 call for an additional 500,000 draftees. The "To Whom it May Concern" is aimed at the potential draftees, who as they had been in the 1863 draft, were mostly poor whites. The "heap of trouble" would most certainly be the President's worries about the War and reelection. The entrance of African American troops in 1863 had certainly offset the need for fresh troops, but Lincoln needed decisive victories both on the battlefield and at home. Not in the Lincoln Barrett sale.
