(SLAVERY and ABOLITION.) Manuscript Legal Document, being an Appointment as the leader of a Slave Patrol. One page, oblong 8vo; signed by the local Justice of the Peace. Np, 18 May 1855

  • Notes: Appointment of George M. McKinney as "a leader of a Patrol detachment for three months and the ballance [sic] of this year.. to visit all negro quarters at least once a weeke [sic] and offener [sic] if necessary." In the decade preceding the Civil War there was increasing fear of some form of a slave revolt in the South. It became customary for white civilians to travel armed, and for regular searches to be made of the quarters of slaves.
