  • Notes: Joshua Bowen Smith (1813-1879) was born to a British father and an Afro-Indian mother, and became a very successful caterer in Cambridge, MA, best known for handling Harvard''s commencement dinners. He was also active in the Underground Railroad, and often employed fugitive slaves as cooks and waiters.
