(SLAVERY AND ABOLITION.) Morgan, Benjamin F. Richmond Palladium:--Extra . . . Address to the Citizens of Wayne County.

(SLAVERY AND ABOLITION.) Morgan, Benjamin F. Richmond Palladium:--Extra . . . Address to the Citizens of Wayne County. Letterpress broadside newspaper extra, 13 x 6 inches; folds, minimal wear; early owner's signature on verso. [Richmond, IN: 1864]

  • Notes: Benjamin Franklin Morgan (1831-1904) was an Indiana Methodist clergyman and active abolitionist who had recently served in the freedman's camps in Mississippi. This address was written for his campaign to win an Indiana legislature seat in a state known for its Copperhead tendencies. Morgan declares his commitment to the abolition of slavery, and denounces those Copperheads and Butternuts who oppose Lincoln in 1864: "Their intentions are to restore the institution of Slavery with all its concomitant evils, and re-instate it in the States where it had an existence, when this administration came into power. Since they have considered the Dred Scott decision as binding as the Constitution itself, they would consequently permit Slavery to be extended into all the free territories. . . . The good which President Lincoln has accomplished, will be reversed by his successor." An attractive Indiana broadside.
