(SLAVERY AND ABOLITION.) PENNEY, J. B. Autograph Letter Signed to Aristarchus Champion, Rochester, New York philanthropist.

A WOMAN EMANCIPATES 12 SLAVES (SLAVERY AND ABOLITION.) PENNEY, J. B. Autograph Letter Signed to Aristarchus Champion, Rochester, New York philanthropist. Large folio sheet, folded to form four 4to pages, written on two, and docketed on a third; creases where folded. New York, 1852

  • Notes: A touching letter in which J.B. Penny asks Aristarchus Champion, a well-known upstate New York attorney and philanthropist to aid a Mrs. Biel, the owner of twelve slaves, whom she is about to emancipate. However, she needed to raise money in order to buy the husband of one of them, who happened to be the mother of seven others among them. The husband had said that he wanted to be able to go with them to "the freedom of Liberia where," he would "train them up." Mrs Biel, obviously stricken with a sense of moral obligation, not only was willing to give up 12 slaves worth $8000, she was going to sell her home to be able to buy the husband of one of them. She needed somehow to make up the difference. Champion, the recipient of this appeal, was a very wealthy man, and the victim of a famous 19th-century bond swindle.(NY Times, May 30, 1863).
