(SLAVERY AND ABOLITION.) Proceedings of the Yearly Meeting of the Friends of Human Progress.

(SLAVERY AND ABOLITION.) Proceedings of the Yearly Meeting of the Friends of Human Progress. 23 pages. 8vo, original printed wrappers, minor wear; minor soiling to title page and final blank. Rochester, NY: C.W. Hebard, 1859

  • Notes: The Friends of Human Progress began as a reform-minded offshoot of the Quaker faith, but soon evolved into a non-denominational annual conference for social reformers of all stripes. It was held each year in Waterloo, NY. Frederick Douglass was an attendee as a member of the 1859 meeting''s five-person Business Committee. His committee presented a long and passionate resolution against slavery and its attendant evils. Douglass is mentioned six times, most notably in response to the anti-slavery resolution, when he "spoke with great eloquence, and his words seemed to take deep hold on the hearts of the audience" (page 7). On pages 8 and 15 his remarks upon religion are summarized at length. 5 copies in OCLC and none known at auction.
