(SLAVERY AND ABOLITION.) [REASON, PATRICK.] The Liberty Bell, By Friends of Freedom.

PATRICK REASON'S MASTERPIECE (SLAVERY AND ABOLITION.) [REASON, PATRICK.] The Liberty Bell, By Friends of Freedom. Engraved frontispiece by Patrick Reason. 104 pages. Small 8vo, original glazed yellow paper-covered boards; yellow paper at the spine cracked at the joints, but holding firm. Boston: For the Massachusetts Anti-Slavery Fair, 1839

  • Notes: a great rarity. one of engraver, patrick reason's most complex works and the first of 15 such annuals. The frontispiece, shows Lady Liberty holding a Bible high above her head, light radiating from behind her. At her feet there are two distinct scenes; one of Africans being taken captive, and the other a group of slaves in chains on a plantation. Above the engraving is the motto "Truth Shall Set You Free." Another large vignette engraving appears at page 69, commemorating the martyrdom of publisher Elijah Lovejoy who was killed when a mob burned down his press in 1837. We were unable to be sure if Reason had engraved this piece or not. Over the course of 17 years, these anti-slavery anthologies, printed material by a virtual "who's who" of New England poets and authors. No copy has been at auction in the last 25 years. This issue contains four pieces by Lydia Maria Child, and contributions by William Lloyd Garrison, and Harriet Martineau among others.
