(SLAVERY AND ABOLITION.) Rockwood, George; photographer. Carte-de-visite portrait of the Rev. Henry Highland Garnet. Albumen photograph, 3 3/4 x 2 1/4 inches, on original photographer's mount; minimal foxing. New York, circa 1860s

  • Notes: A portrait of the important abolitionist Henry Highland Garnet, who supported armed rebellion and was viewed as a radical by even ardent abolitionists such as Frederick Douglass and William Lloyd Garrison. His 1865 sermon on the passage of the 13th Amendment was the first address by an African-American to Congress. He later served as ambassador to Liberia. We are aware of no other Garnet photographs at auction.
