RARE AND INFLUENTIAL WORK (SLAVERY AND ABOLITION.) RUFFNER, HENRY. Address to the People of West Virginia; Shewing (sic) that Slavery is Injurious to the Public Welfare, and that it may be Gradually Abolished, without Detriment to the Rights and Interests of the Slaveholders. (drop title). 40 pages, removed; some signs to the spine of having been in a larger volume, "No ink" on the title page; vertical crease where folded. Lexington: Printed by R. C. Noel, 1847

  • Notes: A work suggesting the confinement of slavery east of the Blue Ridge mountains and its gradual abolition in those states. Ruffner's pamphlet came at a crucial point in the mid-nineteenth century politics of slavery and state's rights. This pamphlet, known as the "Ruffner pamphlet" caused a sensation when it first appeared. West Virginia eventually separated from Virginia when it seceded from the Union in 1861. A second edition was published in Louisville the same year. Haynes 16178; LCP 9008; Howes, R496; Sabin 73922.
