(SLAVERY and ABOLITION.) Runaway Slave Collar, being a double-link chain with iron and brass identification plaque and original locking device and key, overall length 15 1/2 inches, brass plaque effaced with a remnant of a couple of letters still visible. Np, 1840-60
- Notes: Collars of this type were put on slaves who had attempted escape. The brass plaque would bear the name of the owner. The name on this collar has been filed off. Though horrific in its implication, it is far more humane than some that bore large, heavy protruding arms to catch on brush and trees in the event of another escape attempt.
