(SLAVERY AND ABOLITION.) Sale of Saves

(SLAVERY AND ABOLITION.) Sale of Saves [sic]. Letterpress broadside, 10 1/4 x 9 1/4 inches, signed by George E. Claybrook and Thomas M. Gosney as administrators; lacking 2-inch piece of lower left corner, tastefully conserved, several early ink marks in text area. Clay County, MO, 8 October 1858

  • Notes: This sale took place just north of Kansas City. The estate of James L. Hickman sold 9 named slaves, aged 5 to 70 years of age, "all likely and under good character." How can a representative of an allegedly superior race be unable to spell "slave"? The typographer also set "eatate" to type instead of "estate." None traced at auction or in OCLC.
