(SLAVERY AND ABOLITION.) SANDERS, SAMUEL D. Of Cheraw, S.C. "Concerning my freedboy Billy."

A HIGHLY UNUSUAL LETTER (SLAVERY AND ABOLITION.) SANDERS, SAMUEL D. Of Cheraw, S.C. "Concerning my freedboy Billy." Autograph Letter Signed to William MacIlwrath, postmaster, Chillicothe, MO. Single 4to leaf, written on both sides, together with the original stamped addressed envelope. Cheraw, S.C., 1867

  • Notes: A touching letter from lieutenant Samuel D. Sanders (1824-c1900), physician and planter of Cheraw, South Carolina, to the postmaster of Chillicothe, Missouri seeking his aid in getting Billy Sanders, whom he refers to as his "Freedboy" back home. It seems that Billy, "was taken by force away from home by the U.S. Army, and left a mere child so far away from his friends and natural supporters and protectors." Sanders had tried unsuccessfully to get help through the Freedman's Bureau, and asks the postmaster if he might personally arrange for transportation for Billy, assuring him that all expenses would be paid. "Please see the 'Express' Co in your town and let me know what they will charge with the transportation in hand to deliver him to me in Cheraw. He is so ignorant of geography that he could not possibly find the way home if he had the means. His nearest route would be by Nashville, Tenn. and Atlanta Ga. to Cheraw, S.C.. Please say to Billy that his relations are all well and living at the same places where he left them. His father is very anxious to see him and that he must come home if possible."
