(SLAVERY AND ABOLITION.) STILL, WILLIAM. The Underground Railroad, a Record of the Facts, Authentic Narratives, Letters, Etc.

(SLAVERY AND ABOLITION.) STILL, WILLIAM. The Underground Railroad, a Record of the Facts, Authentic Narratives, Letters, Etc. Copious illustrations. 780, [12] pages. Thick royal 8vo, original deeply embossed covers, decoratively stamped in gilt; extremities lightly rubbed, small white spot on the spine; inner hinges started. Philadelphia: People's Publishing Co, 1879

  • Notes: revised edition. In the Preface Still recounts how his mother twice fled to freedom with her four children, the second time having to leave two of the older ones behind. He tells how, after over forty years, one of them turned up in his office in Philadelphia, not realizing he had come to his brother. Still's history remains the single best account of the Underground Railroad ever written. Not simply because of its extraordinary size and scope, but because Still writes from firsthand experience, and a personal knowledge of most of the key figures.
