(SLAVERY AND ABOLITION.) SUMMERS, W. A Black Ball * A Black Tea Party.

(SLAVERY AND ABOLITION.) SUMMERS, W. A Black Ball * A Black Tea Party. Two hand-colored copper engravings: 8 x 10-1/4 and 7 x 10-3/8 inches; the former with approximately one inch of margin, the latter with only 1/4 to a 1/2 inch of margin, and some light soil. London: Summers, by H. Isaacs, circa 1820's-1830's

  • Notes: Following the appearance of a series of hand-colored caricatures titled "Life in Philadelphia," issued by Edward Williams Clay of Philadelphia, at least two English houses began to issue their own versions of same. The Black Ball was printed on the reverse of an engraving of a family of beggars. The house of Summers was definitely economizing.
