  • Notes: Alfred Jackson (1805-1901) was the personal servant of President Andrew Jackson at the Hermitage in Tennessee. Born into slavery, he was at the president''s deathbed in 1845, remained with his wife as the family''s only servants during the Civil War, and in freedom remained as a tour guide at the Hermitage until his death, having spent virtually his entire life there. The caption on verso reads "The old body servant of Gen. Jackson." Other images of Alfred Jackson and a note on his life can be found in Hoobler, "Images of America: Nashville, Volume II," page 65. Provenance: from an auction of the Nashville photographic collection of Carl and Otto Giers, 2016.
