(SLAVERY AND ABOLITION.) Tilton, Theodore. A dramatic autograph inscription written on the occasion of the Emancipation Proclamation. Autograph sentiment Signed, 7 1/2 x 5 inches; minimal toning at edges, possibly excised from an autograph album. Np, 6 January 1863

  • Notes: Theodore Tilton (1835-1907) was a prominent white abolitionist from New York, then working as Henry Ward Beecher''s assistant. This inscription was written in somebody''s autograph album six days after the Emancipation Proclamation: "Thank God and Abraham Lincoln for the Decree of Freedom, emancipating 3,000,000 slaves. A health to William Lloyd Garrison!"
