(SLAVERY AND ABOLITION.) TRUTH, SOJOURNER. Carte-de-visite, showing the subject seated with a daguerreotype on her lap. 4x2-1/2 inches, simply framed with the photograph within a recessed mat. [Battle Creek, MI], circa 1863-1870

  • Notes: a possibly unrecorded image of the noted abolitionist, evangelist, women's rights advocate and mystic, probably taken in the mid-1860s. Sojourner Truth was born Isabella Baumfree in up-state New York. In the early 1830s, as a young woman, Isabella became involved with members of a religious sect led by Robert Matthews, alias "Matthias," a fanatical Christian who claimed to be an ex-Jew touched by God. The cult lived in a communal "Kingdom" in Ossining, New York. Isabella was officially only a servant in the homes of two members, but was active in the sect as well. As the sect began to unravel in 1834, one of the members for whom Isabella worked died of what was apparently poisoning. Isabella was implicated, but brought a suit against her accusers for slander and won, including $100 in damages. The entire ordeal is recounted in Sojourner Truth's Narrative.
