(SLAVERY AND ABOLITION.)--(TUBMAN, HARRIET.) [ERNSBERGER, W.] Oil portrait of Harriet Tubman, after a famous photograph by W. Ernsberge

(SLAVERY AND ABOLITION.)--(TUBMAN, HARRIET.) [ERNSBERGER, W.] Oil portrait of Harriet Tubman, after a famous photograph by W. Ernsberger, signed "C. Schwarz" in the lower right corner. Oil on canvas, 24 x 21 on the original stretcher; surface with even cracking and some repair; in a period frame. np, circa 1908-1920?

  • Notes: a fine oil portrait of Harriet Tubman painted from one of the last known photographs taken of her by w. ernsberger of auburn, new york in 1908. William Ernsberger was a local photographer who had also photographed Rutherford B. Hayes, and other dignitaries when they passed through upstate New York. We were unable to find out anything about the artist, but from the quality of the portrait, he or she was definitely trained.
