(SLAVERY AND ABOLITION.) [TYLER, JOHN.] Sixth Annual Report of the Board of Managers of the Colonization Society of Virginia.

(SLAVERY AND ABOLITION.) [TYLER, JOHN.] Sixth Annual Report of the Board of Managers of the Colonization Society of Virginia. 28 pages. 8vo, modern marbled paper-covered boards with morocco label up the spine; original printed salmon wrappers bound in. Richmond: The Southern Churchman, 1837

  • Notes: The Virginia Colonization Society was headed by John Tyler, later tenth President of the United States. In 1835, Tyler proposed eliminating the slave trade, but not the institution of slavery itself. Described an abolitionist publication to a group of prominent Virginians: "Here is a picture upon the external covering designed to represent each of you gentlemen. A scourge is in your hand, and three victims bound and kneeling at your feet. You are represented as demons in the shape of men; and by way of contrast, here stands Arthur Tappan, Mr. Somebody Garrison, or Mr. Foreigner Thompson, patting the greasy little fellows on their cheeks and giving then most lovely kisses." Afro-Americana [10835] cites only this and the seventh annual report of the Society. Not in Blockson, Schomburg Collection or Work, OCLC locating four copies.
