(SLAVERY AND ABOLITION.) W.E. & F. NEWTON, GLOBEMAKERS TO THE QUEEN. Capture of Slaves.

FINE PAINTING ON GLASS (SLAVERY AND ABOLITION.) W.E. & F. NEWTON, GLOBEMAKERS TO THE QUEEN. Capture of Slaves. Hand-painted Victorian "Magic-Lantern"glass slide, 3 inches in diameter, set in a rectangular wood frame, 4x6- inches; depicting a group of slavers seizing a couple of Africans in the water, next to a ship, another ship can be seen in the background. The frame is stamped with the maker's name. London: W. E. & F. Newton, circa 1850

  • Notes: We have tentatively dated this to the mid-19th century, based on the stamp of the maker, "W. E. & F. Newton, Globe-Makers to the Queen," which appears twice on the wooden frame of the slide. The Newton family are among the best-known English globe makers. The scene depicts a group of sailors in a long-boat; four are rowing while one gives directions and another in the front of the boat threatens the two Africans with a long spear-like weapon.
