SLAVERY IN COURT. PASSMORE WILLIAMSON CASE. The Sun.

SLAVERY IN COURT. PASSMORE WILLIAMSON CASE. The Sun. Broadside, small, narrow sheet, 8-3/4 x 4-1/4 inches; center crease where folded. [Philadelphia, 22 September, 1855]

  • Notes: A rare broadside on behalf of Passmore Williamson, secretary of the Pennsylvania Abolition Society. Williamson was accused of aiding in the escape of Jane and her two sons Daniel and Isaiah, slaves of John H. Wheeler, U.S. Ambassador to Nicaragua, while his boat was moored at the Philadelphia port. Federal District Judge John K. Kane ordered Williamson and five free blacks that aided him jailed for "forcefully" removing Jane from the boat. When it became clear that Williamson did not have the slaves, Kane was forced to free him. See Slavery in the Courtroom, pages 39-43.
