(SLAVERY.) Pair of bills of sale for enslaved people sold by the Hagan family in Revolutionary Maryland. Manuscript documents signed, each one page, 12 x 7½ inches and 6¾ x 7½ inches, with docketing on verso; moderate wear. Maryland, 1775 and 1780


  • Notes: The first document is a bill of sale of "a Negro girl named Terry" (no age given) for £63 from Joseph Hagan of Charles County, MD to John Summers. The seller Hagan signs by mark. It is dated 31 July 1775, a few weeks after the Battle of Bunker Hill.

    The second document is another bill of sale of "one Negro boy named Samuel" for £1350 by Ignatius Hagan of Frederick County, MD to Basil Roberts of Montgomery County, MD, dated from later in the Revolution on 23 May 1780.
