(SLAVERY.) Charleston slave badge issued to a servant in 1814.

(SLAVERY.) Charleston slave badge issued to a servant in 1814. Copper tag, 2 x 2 inches, stamped "Charleston / No. 677 / Servant / 1814"; sharp and legible, original patina, bent and straightened; the usual Lafar hallmark not found on verso. Sold not subject to return. Charleston, SC, 1814

  • Notes: Slave registration tags or badges were used in Charleston, SC from the late 18th century through 1865. The present example was issued to a household servant, who would have been required to wear the tag around their neck while hired out to another owner. A very similar 1814 badge with a different serial number is held by the Charleston Museum.
