[Whittier, John G.] Narrative of James Williams, an American Slave. 12mo, publisher's cloth-backed lettered boards, somewhat worn at extremities; lacking the frontispiece and endpapers, hinges starting. New York, 1838 first edition, first state, preceded by another version dictated by Williams and published in 1837. The present edition was written by John Greenleaf Whittier from conversations with Williams whom he met via John W. Hill, a noted abolitionist whose home was a haven for runaways.
