OCLC locates at least half a dozen copies of the 1785 Narrative of the Lord's Wonderful Dealings with John Marrant, but only one copy of the present volume is cited. The Journal is complete, but the final sermon is lacking 3 leaves. Marrant, a preacher and missionary, was born in New York in 1755. He was taken captive by the Cherokee Indians but was treated well, learned their language and managed to convert a number of them to Christianity. Arthur A. Schomburg stated that, "John Marrant was undoubtedly one of the first, if not the first Negro minister of the gospel in North America... He was the first man to carry the word of God and the teachings of Jesus Christ to the Cherokees, Creeks, Catawar, and Housaw Indians.".
