SMITH, SAMUEL FRANCIS. Autograph Manuscript Signed, the complete 7 stanzas of his scarce work Paul Revere's Ride, beginning "Hang out the lantern!

SMITH, SAMUEL FRANCIS. Autograph Manuscript Signed, the complete 7 stanzas of his scarce work Paul Revere's Ride, beginning "Hang out the lantern! Let oppression quail, / The pen of history shall record the tale, / A feeble taper, flashing o'er the sea, / But the first signal-light of liberty." 2 pages, same side of a folded 8vo sheet; minor repaired tears at separations along folds. Np, 18 April 1894

  • Notes: Although Longfellow's famous poem on the same subject is more well-known, this is a lovely copy of Smith's version, penned on the 119th anniversary of the ride and just a year before his death. We could find no other transcript of this poem by Smith appearing at auction in the last 25 years.
