  • Notes: first edition of w.e. b. du bois magnum opus, the most exhaustive study of its kind to date. Du Bois was able to draw on early studies of Philadelphia's substantial free black community done by Benjamin Bacon, Charles Gardner in the 1840's. Added to this study is a 'Special Report on Domestic Service' by Isabel Eaton.
