(SOUTH CAROLINA.) McDuffie, George. To the Public.

A DUEL BETWEEN TWO U.S. CONGRESSMEN (SOUTH CAROLINA.) McDuffie, George. To the Public. Broadside, 335 x 207 mm; 2 closed tears, slight separation at folds with only very slight loss of text, and marginal tear at seal with loss. [South Carolina, 1822]

  • Notes: George McDuffie (1790-1851) was at this time a U.S. Representative from South Carolina. This broadside relates to the duels he fought with U.S. Senator Col. William Cumming of Georgia. McDuffie recounts in detail how Cumming had issued the challenge and then made every possible effort to postpone the duel, ultimately failing to show up at the appointed time. He concludes by "pronouncing Col. Cumming a coward. He has shrunk from a contest of his own seeking." The planned duel was later held, with McDuffie suffering serious wounds but surviving.

The broadside is in the form of a letter "To the public." This copy was postmarked from Edgefield Courthouse, SC, and mailed to one of McDuffie's colleagues in the House of Representatives, Thomas Hill Hubbard of Utica, NY.
