(SPANISH-AMERICAN WAR.) Claud Casselman family papers from his service in the Philippines and elsewhere. 29 items (0.3 linear feet), various sizes and conditions. Vp, 1889-1908

  • Notes: Claud Volney Casselman (1880-1967), son of Civil War veteran Josias Casselman (see lot 120), was born in Chautauqua County, NY and later settled in Wyoming. This collection includes 16 military photographs taken or acquired during Casselman's service in the Philippines and Fort Logan, CO during and after the Spanish-American War, all on original plain card mounts. Some depict camp life with Casselman and his fellow soldiers, including a kitchen scene with five soldiers and a Filipino man peeling potatoes. Others were captioned in the negative and likely purchased, including a haunting image of soldiers examining a pile of skulls at Manila's Paco Cemetery.
Included with these military photographs are: 3 long letters home to New York from Manila and Fort Logan, CO, 1902-03 (27 pages total) * 6 undated family photographs * Autograph book with inscriptions by friends and family, 1889-1908 * 1897 diary of brother Ralph E. Casselman (1886-1974) * 1924 charter issued to the Cheyenne, WY chapter of the United Spanish War Veterans, listing Casselman as a founding member * and a possibly unrelated Osborn family photo album, circa 1860s-80s.
