(SPANISH-AMERICAN WAR.) Family papers of Simon Snyder, brigadier general in Cuba and the Philippines. 56 items: 13 letters, 7 other manuscripts, 17 photographs, and 19 pieces of ephemera, all sleeved in one ring binder; some items with moderate wear. Vp, bulk 1874-1902

  • Notes: Simon Snyder (1839-1913) joined the United States Army as a lieutenant just days after the bombardment of Fort Sumter, and remained in the army for more than 40 years. His most distinguished service was in leading several regiments against rebel forces in Cebu in the Philippines. Included in this lot are summaries of his service; 2 photographs and 2 silhouettes of the general in his later career; 4 letters in Spanish to Snyder as military commander in Cebu from the local junta and church, 1899-1900; 3 Manila newspaper clippings describing his Cebu exploits; theater programs and other ephemera from the Philippines; and a poignant letter upon the death of his wife, in which his sister offers to care for his daughter, 1874. General Snyder was the grandson and namesake of Pennsylvania governor Simon Snyder (1759-1819); a few items relate to the governor''s historic homestead. A few other items relate to son-in-law Colonel James Ronayne through 1921.
