(SPANISH SLAVE DOCUMENT.) The Accounts and Division of the Estate of Alonso Ruiz de Ona and his wife Constanza de Salva Maldonado [supplied English title]. [43] leaves in manuscript, folio, written on rectos and versos; witnessed and signed by local officials. Medina del Camp, Oran, 26 October 1607
-
Notes: An accounting of the assets as well as debts of an estate, provided for the heirs of two Spanish citizens, a husband and wife in Medina del Campo, in Oran (present day Algeria), with numerous references throughout regarding the purchase and maintenance of slaves, including the purchase of shackles. There is also a detailed accounting of the transport of a slave woman named Fatima from Malaga to Toledo, after she was brought to Spain from the African mainland.
Written within the first decade of the 17th century, this is an extraordinary glimpse into the household of a well-to-do Spanish family in the time of Cervantes. When this document was being written, the English were just establishing their first settlement in the New World. Within a few years, the slave trade to Virginia would begin.
