SPENCER, JOHN. Etched illustration of man praying in tefillin on page 1204. [36], 1232, [30] pages, including engraved portrait of Spencer. Folio, contemporary vellum with blind-stamped arabesque centerpiece on covers, spine darkened; most of contents severely browned. Tübingen: Johann Georg Cotta, 1732

  • Notes: Spencer's most famous book, first published in 1685, "which laid the foundations of the science of comparative religion. In this work Spencer maintained that many Jewish laws and customs could be linked with those of other Semitic peoples"--EJ XIV, 262. The critical preface by Pfaff reviews contemporary scholarly reactions to Spencer's ideas.
